How We Score Peptide Vendors

Every vendor score on PeptideScores is the result of three layers working together: real human judgment, a transparent weighted algorithm, and AI-assisted data processing. No single layer operates in isolation — and no vendor can game the system.

Human Review

Every vendor listed on PeptideScores has been manually reviewed by a real person. Our team actively monitors researcher communities, verifies lab documentation, places test orders, and makes subjective calls that no algorithm can replicate. A vendor with an impressive score sheet but a pattern of community complaints will not rank well here — because a human has read those complaints.

Human review also serves as a quality gate. Vendors that fail basic standards for transparency, documentation, or community standing are excluded entirely before any score is calculated.

Weighted Algorithm

Approved vendors are scored across six primary weighted dimensions: purity, reputation, service, shipping, value, and selection. Purity and third-party lab testing carry the greatest weight because they directly reflect product integrity.

Where available, vendors also receive granular subscores within each category — for example, breaking purity down by HPLC results, endotoxin testing, and COA disclosure. These subscores add precision and are displayed on individual vendor profiles. Weights are calibrated to reflect what researchers care about most, and no vendor can pay to influence where the algorithm places them.

AI-Assisted Analysis

Research peptide communities generate enormous volumes of discussion across forums, review platforms, and social media. AI helps us process this at a scale that would be impossible manually — flagging sentiment shifts, surfacing emerging complaints, and identifying inconsistencies in vendor claims.

Critically, AI findings are always reviewed by a human before they influence a score. AI is a research tool for us, not a decision-maker. The final call on every vendor's standing rests with our editorial team.

How We Evaluate Purity & Testing

Purity and third-party lab testing carry the heaviest weight in our algorithm because they directly reflect product integrity. We break this dimension down into six measurable pillars, each scored independently and visible on every vendor profile.   • COA Access (0–20)

    Are certificates of analysis publicly available and easy to find? Vendors who publish COAs for every batch — ideally linked directly from the product page or accessible via a QR code on the vial — score highest. Vendors who require an email request, hide COAs behind a login, or do not provide them at all lose points here.

  • Testing Independence (0–20)

    Is the testing performed by a genuinely independent third-party laboratory, or by an in-house lab or one with a financial relationship to the vendor? Full marks go to vendors who use established, unaffiliated labs such as Janoshik, Freedom Diagnostics, or other recognized independent facilities. In-house testing or labs with unclear independence receive reduced or zero credit.

  • Batch Integrity (0–20)

    Is every production batch tested, or just a single showcase batch? Vendors who test and publish results for each lot earn full marks. Those who provide only one representative COA — or reuse the same certificate across multiple batches — score lower, because a single COA does not guarantee that the vial you receive came from that tested batch.

  • Verified Purity (0–20)

    What purity percentage does the COA actually report? We look at the HPLC-verified purity value on the certificate. Vendors reporting 99%+ purity with supporting chromatography earn the highest scores. Values below 95%, or COAs that omit the purity percentage entirely, receive reduced credit.

  • Testing Breadth (0–10)

    How many types of testing are performed beyond basic purity? A vendor who only runs HPLC earns fewer points than one who also tests for endotoxins, sterility, and amino acid composition. More comprehensive testing panels give greater confidence that the product is safe and accurately labeled. See the testing methods section below for detail on each assay.

  • COA Freshness (0–10)

    How recent are the certificates of analysis? A COA from two years ago does not reflect current production conditions. We reward vendors whose most recent COAs are dated within the last 6–12 months. Stale or undated certificates lose points, since they cannot confirm ongoing quality.

Lab Testing Methods We Look For

Not all COAs are created equal. A certificate that only reports purity via HPLC tells you the peptide is present at the stated concentration, but says nothing about safety or contamination. The most rigorous vendors — like Southern Aminos, who runs an 8-point testing panel through Freedom Diagnostics — go well beyond a single assay. Here are the eight testing methods we look for and why each one matters for research-grade peptides:

  • 1. HPLC Purity (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography)

    The foundational assay. HPLC separates the components of a sample and measures what percentage is the target peptide versus impurities, truncated sequences, or residual solvents. A purity value of 99%+ on HPLC is the baseline expectation for research-grade material. Without this, there is no way to confirm the vial contains what the label says it does.

  • 2. Mass Spectrometry (MS)

    HPLC tells you how pure the sample is, but mass spectrometry tells you whether the peptide is actually the correct molecule. MS measures the molecular weight of the sample and confirms it matches the expected mass of the target peptide. This catches misidentification — a vial labeled as BPC-157 that actually contains a different or truncated sequence would pass HPLC but fail MS.

  • 3. Endotoxin Testing (LAL)

    Endotoxins are fragments of dead bacteria that can trigger severe immune and inflammatory responses even in microscopic quantities. The Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) assay detects endotoxin contamination down to fractions of an EU/mL. For any peptide intended for in vivo research, endotoxin testing is essential — a vial that is 99% pure can still be dangerous if it is contaminated with endotoxins.

  • 4. Sterility Testing

    Confirms the vial is free of viable bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. Sterility testing involves incubating a sample under conditions designed to promote microbial growth and checking for contamination. This is distinct from endotoxin testing — a sterile vial can still contain endotoxins from dead bacteria, and an endotoxin-free vial can still contain live organisms. Both tests are needed for full safety assurance.

  • 5. Amino Acid Analysis (AAA)

    Breaks the peptide down into its individual amino acid building blocks and quantifies each one. This verifies that the peptide has the correct amino acid composition and ratio — for example, confirming that a 15-amino-acid peptide like BPC-157 actually contains the right 15 amino acids in the right proportions. AAA catches synthesis errors that HPLC and MS might miss, such as a sequence that is the right length and mass but has the wrong amino acids substituted in.

  • 6. Peptide Content / Net Weight

    Confirms that the amount of peptide in the vial matches the labeled quantity — for example, that a 5mg vial actually contains 5mg of lyophilized peptide, not 3mg of peptide mixed with 2mg of filler. Peptide content testing uses gravimetric or UV-spectrophotometric methods to verify the net weight. Without this, a vendor could be underfilling vials even when the purity percentage is accurate.

  • 7. Residual Solvent Testing

    Peptides are synthesized using chemical solvents such as acetonitrile, DMF, and TFA. Residual solvent testing detects whether harmful manufacturing solvents remain in the final product above safe thresholds. Even high-purity peptides can retain trace solvents from synthesis, and long-term exposure to these residues can degrade the peptide or pose health risks in research applications.

  • 8. Heavy Metals Screening

    Detects trace contamination from lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and other toxic heavy metals that can be introduced through reagents, equipment, or water used during synthesis. Heavy metals can accumulate in biological systems and interfere with research results even at very low concentrations. ICP-MS or similar techniques are used to screen down to parts-per-billion levels. This is the assay most frequently omitted by budget vendors, which makes its presence a strong signal of testing rigor.

A vendor who runs all eight of these assays on every batch — and publishes the results — demonstrates a level of commitment to quality that goes well beyond industry norms. In our scoring system, testing breadth is explicitly rewarded: a vendor with HPLC-only testing can still score well on purity, but cannot match a vendor with a full 8-point panel.

    We start from the vendor's regular everyday price, not just temporary sale prices, so the score reflects what a researcher typically pays — not a one-off promotion.

  • Frequency & Depth of Sales

    A vendor that runs frequent, deep discounts is evaluated differently from one with stable pricing. Consistent discounting can indicate genuine value — or an inflated MSRP designed to look like a deal.

  • Purchase Price vs Testing Breadth & Depth

    A higher price can be justified by more comprehensive lab testing — HPLC, endotoxin, sterility, and full COA disclosure. We reward vendors whose pricing reflects the rigor of testing behind the product, not just the lowest number on the page.

  • Why Today's Price Alone Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

    Because the score factors in MSRP, sale patterns, and testing quality together, a vendor may score higher or lower than a simple price comparison suggests. The goal is to capture real, long-term value — not reward whoever happens to be running a sale today.

When content is sponsored or when we feature a vendor outside of our algorithmic rankings, we clearly label it as such. You will always know when a placement is paid versus earned through our scoring system.

No. Our algorithmic rankings cannot be influenced by payment. Vendors can participate in sponsored placements (clearly labeled), but these are entirely separate from our independent ranking system.

How often are rankings updated?

Rankings are recalculated on a rolling basis as new data becomes available. Major data sources are refreshed regularly to ensure accuracy, and significant events — like a vendor obtaining new lab results or receiving a wave of community complaints — are factored in as soon as they are verified.

How can a vendor improve their ranking?

By genuinely improving. The most impactful steps are obtaining third-party lab testing with publicly available COAs, building a consistent track record of good customer service, and maintaining a positive reputation in the research community. There are no shortcuts — the algorithm rewards authentic quality and penalizes vendors who fall short.

Is PeptideScores affiliated with any vendor?

We are not owned by or formally affiliated with any vendor. We maintain affiliate relationships for revenue, but these do not influence our independent rankings. A vendor we earn commission from is held to exactly the same standard as one we do not.
